A freshly made bed is one of the first things a guest notices. The goal is simple: clean linens, a smooth comforter, even pillows, and crisp corners that stay tucked when the guest pulls back the covers.
What you’ll need#
- Clean fitted sheet and flat sheet
- Clean pillowcases
- Comforter or duvet with a clean cover
- Mattress protector, if the property uses one
1. Check the bed before adding linens#
Remove the used linens and check the mattress protector, mattress edges, and headboard for stains, hair, or anything left behind. Replace or report anything that needs attention. Smooth the protector so it lies flat.
2. Put on the fitted sheet#
Match the sheet corners to the mattress corners and pull each one fully underneath. Run your hands across the surface to remove wrinkles. If a corner slips off while you work, fix it now.
3. Center the flat sheet#
Spread the flat sheet evenly, with the same amount hanging over each side. Leave enough fabric at the foot to tuck securely beneath the mattress. Smooth from the center outward.
4. Make hospital corners#
Work at one corner at the foot of the bed:
- Tuck the sheet hanging over the foot of the mattress underneath it.
- About a foot up the side, lift the loose sheet to form a diagonal triangle.
- Hold that triangle up and tuck the fabric hanging below it under the mattress.
- Lower the triangle. Pull it snug, then tuck its lower edge under the mattress.
- Repeat on the other corner.

What to look for: A clean diagonal fold, a snug side, and no loose fabric bunching at the foot. The fold should look crisp without pulling the sheet so tight that a guest struggles to get into bed.
5. Add the comforter#
Shake out the comforter or duvet to distribute the fill. Center it so both sides hang evenly. Smooth any lumps and straighten the bottom edge. If the property’s bed style calls for it, fold the top edge back to show a band of clean sheet.
6. Finish the pillows#
Fluff each pillow and pull its case fully into place. Tuck or turn the open ends away from the guest’s view. Arrange the pillows evenly against the headboard, following the property’s usual setup.
Final guest-ready check#
Step back and look at the bed from the doorway. Check that the comforter is centered, the pillows are balanced, the visible linens are free of hair and stains, and both hospital corners are neat. Take the bed photo from an angle that shows the full setup clearly.
